Epcot opened in 1982, eleven years after Walt Disney World's flagship park, the Magic Kingdom. Called "EPCOT Center" until the mid-1990s, the park was an interpretation of an original concept imagined by Walt Disney: an Experimental Prototype Community Of Tomorrow. The park is best described as a permanent World's Fair: a demonstration of innovation and industry (Future World), and an exhibition of world cultures (World Showcase). Epcot is so large, many recommend planning two days to adequately tour both sections of the park. Given its focus on "edu-tainment," Epcot was and is an oddity in the world of theme parks. Though always a major tourist draw, the park initially struggled to find its identity, but it quickly established itself as a favorite among adult visitors. In recent years, Disney has improved the park's appeal to younger guests as well. LandsUnder Construction! |
